Sedation Dentistry
If you become anxious during treatment or have had difficulty getting comfortable during dental procedures in the past, we encourage you to talk with our dentists to see if you are a candidate for sedation dentistry.
Dental sedation options available at Mobley Family Dentistry include:
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, or "laughing gas" is commonly used in dentistry. It is mixed with oxygen and breathed through a nose mask during the dental procedure. Nitrous oxide sedation has a mildly relaxing effect, but does not put you to sleep; you can have a conversation and respond to questions or instructions from your dentist. The effects of nitrous oxide sedation wear off shortly after the mask is removed.
Nitrous oxide sedation may be used for adults and children and can be helpful for patients that are anxious or have a strong gag reflex during dental treatment.
Oral Conscious Sedation for Dentistry
Oral conscious sedation is accomplished through a combination of oral sedative medications that the dentist prescribes to be taken the night before and on the morning of your dental procedure. This type of sedation is safe and effective, and provides you with a deeper state of relaxation, although it is not general sedation.
Oral conscious sedation is often used for surgical dental procedures or longer restorative appointments to allow the patient to be in a fully relaxed state throughout their treatment. For this type of sedation, you would bring a companion along that can stay with you after your appointment until the effects of the sedation wear off, usually after a few hours.
While under oral conscious sedation, you are able to move and speak and respond to instructions. After the sedatives wear off, most patients remember going to the dentist, but do not remember much about the treatment itself.
